Bethany's Christmas 2008

Monday, December 29, 2008

Merry Christmas, 2008! I'm finally getting around to posting about Christmas. Bethany was really excited about all of her presents and the general gaiety of the day, as you'll see from the pictures! We had so much fun watching Bethie unwrap her gifts.

James gave me a wonderful gift--a night off with the girls! Bethany had not been sleeping well the few days prior to Christmas, and I was pretty darn tired. After giving me a bunch of my favorite pampering stuff, James explained that he had arranged it with Grandma Johnson that I could have a slumber party at her house with my mom and sister! Thoughtful, huh?! So that evening, my mom, my sister and I braved the blizzard and drove to Grandma's (and Grandpa's, didn't mean to leave you out there, Gromp). We had a wonderful time playing games, eating stuff and visiting. Then, right before I took my luxurious bubble bath and fell into bed, I called James to wish him a good night and to thank him once again. As it turns out, James had been throwing up all night--very ill. But he didn't want to tell me and ruin my night! After arguing for awhile about whether or not I would come home (I wanted to, he didn't want me to), James convinced me to stay, since Bethany was asleep and he was just going to bed anyway. Not to mention the raging blizzard outside, which was pretty dangerous by this time. So I stayed, but felt quite guilty about the whole situation! (He survived the night, brave man, and is doing better now. Stupid stomach flu.)

Some of Bethany's favorite gifts:

1. Her new slippery slide! Bethany got a new slide for Christmas! She absolutely LOVES it and has slid down it more than a hundred times already. She's such an active little kid, we needed an outlet for her energy this winter!

2. Her "Who Loves Bethany?" book that Aunt Tracee made. In it are pictures of her family--aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents--most of whom are all holding her. It's scrapbooked so cute and laminated, and Bethany really enjoys looking at the pictures and saying everyone's names!

3. Table and chair set! Bethany's grandparents gave her a small table and four little chairs. Bethany loves this ("My seat! My table! My seat!") and uses it to eat, color and everything else! (I dropped the table on my small toe while assembling--it's solid wood and we were afraid my toe was broken. Thank goodness it's not, just bruised pretty badly. Bethany now says, "Mommy toe, owie. Hurt.")

4. Her blocks. She likes to throw them. We'll have to work on this to prevent serious head-clunking.

5. Her "Doodle Pro" magnetic drawing board thingy. She loves to "Lee-da-lee" with it and we are hoping for increased sacrament meeting reverence as a result.

We had a good Christmas, but we're now looking forward to the new year! Not to contradict Michael McLean, but we do not "cry the day we take the tree down." We get those decorations down the day after Christmas (leaving them up makes them seem like a Christmas ghost town, we think) and we even have most of the pine needles vacuumed up, thanks to our new vacuum cleaner. (We had to buy a new one after our old one exploded--yes, I said exploded!) We like the season, but we also like getting back to normal! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

"True-Blooded Aggies" March Through Snowy, Blowy Blizzard!

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

I just wanted to say "Congratulations!" to my little (little?) brother James, who earned his degree last Saturday. And boy, was his graduation day cold! I've never seen graduates march through a blizzard before. (It was not unlike the march of the penguins, all of them in their black robes.) And there we all were, in the blizzard, cheering the graduates on! Nothing like "Pomp and Circumstance" when your circumstances are very, very cold! Below are some pictures from the snowy, blowy day!

The graduate himself: way to go, little bro!

Christmas Angel

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

I just had to post a picture of Bethany all dolled up in her Christmas dress! We thought she was so cute, although the flash of the camera made her eyes look red. ("Can you even dye my eyes to match my gown? Jolly old town!") And Bethany is actually really good with the tree, after the first day we put it up, when she was bent on un-decorating it as fast as I could decorate! But she seemed to get it all out of her system and now just likes looking at the pretty lights. We hear "Lighs! Wow!" a lot from Bethany these days--it's so fun to have this precious daughter to share Christmas magic with!

A New Calling for Jenny . . .I've Never Laughed So Hard at the Bishop.

Saturday, December 6, 2008

Well, I've always said the Church is all about kicking us out of our comfort zones. I believe the Sunday School answer for this is, "This is how we grow." At any rate, I have been released from my very comfortable calling of gospel doctrine instructor (piece of cake) into a totally uncomfortable arena (and I do mean "arena" literally). And "uncomfortable" is putting it mildly--I am TOTALLY FREAKING OUT! There's nothing wrong with the calling, it's just a little weird that they asked ME to do it! Here goes . . .

They've asked me to be the young women sports coach. It's okay, go ahead and laugh.

After I laughed so hard in the bishop's office that I actually started leaking tears, I went home and told James (again, laughing so hard I was crying, and then he joined me). I accepted, of course--I've had enough callings in the Church to know that the Lord will help me--but have you ever heard of anything so hilarious? ME? A COACH? Those who know me well know that I have absolutely zero athletic ability and, in fact, only go to sporting events because I enjoy singing the fight songs and hanging out with people I like. I do not know what they are actually doing down there on the field, or court, or whatever--I just cheer when everyone else does.

So the other night I went to a sort of training meeting for my new calling, and learned all sorts of new things, for example: a basketball court has a front court and a back court. Who knew? I still don't know what a pick and roll is, however. But you can't learn everything at once, right?

The crazy thing is, I'm the only person (well, Julie is a close second, sorry Julie) in my family who doesn't play or "get" sports. My very athletic brothers all eat, breathe, live and die by sports (particularly the Aggies). My husband follows sports closely, my parents follow sports, my mother totally gets it, too. She can watch a football game and follow it completely. Both of my parents can. And yet they call ME to be the young women coach! ME!

There is a bright spot to all of this. I am actually going to be one of two coaches, so I'm not alone! And the other gal is very athletic and totally gets it. So I figure I'll just wash the jerseys and bring the Gatorade and love the young women. I can do all of that. And who knows, maybe I'll learn a few things. (I'll try to forget my own terrible experiences as a young woman when my team actually wanted me to stay home and my coach called me "stupid" and then came to my house later to apologize.)

Oh, and BTW--if anyone in my ward reads this post, please do not tell the young women exactly how terrified I am. I'm going to put on a confident front! (I do have some good acting ability.) Go team! Go team! Go team!

Bethany, Santa. Santa, Bethany.

Thursday, December 4, 2008

Well, Bethany has been officially introduced to Santa Claus! James, Tracee and Ruby invited us to their ward party to meet the jolly old elf (our ward doesn't invite him) and it was really fun! We were worried that Bethany might freak out and cry, but she was "good for goodness sake." When we sat her on his lap and started snapping pictures, she just looked at us like, "Well, this is a little weird," sat there for a minute with a very somber expression and then got really excited about the candy cane he gave her. (Ruby didn't like Santa so much and James and Tracee got a great picture of her screaming.) All in all, she was very "ho-ho-ho" hum about the entire experience!

It's Hard to Beat Beaters!

When the weather turns cold, the oven turns on! Yep, we have a (probably-not-too-healthy) habit in the wintertime of making hot chocolate chip cookies every night. Lest you think we're Martha Stewart (we're not), all we do is make dough about once a week and then make a couple of cookies each night. Like I said, not healthy but oh-so cozy and mmmmm, mmmmm good! Bethany and James get one beater each after I make the dough. Bethie is a big fan of the beater-licking thing!

Gingerbread Houses Are a Pain in the Leg.

Monday, December 1, 2008

Okay, so gingerbread houses aren't really a pain in the leg. Just the neck. ("Pain in the leg" just came to mind because Bethany had four shots today in her legs, poor baby, see below.) Actually, we had a great time tonight decorating our gingerbread house during F.H.E., meaning we laughed a LOT trying (let me emphasize TRYING) to make our house look like the little picture on the gingerbread kit box. (They make it look so easy!) Looking at the finished product, we're just hoping that no little gingerbread building inspector men come around to check its structural soundness, 'cause this little house will not stand the test of time. And may not stand for any time whatsoever.

On a more positive note, while we decorated our sad, sorry little house we watched our favorite claymation Christmas show: The Year Without a Santa Claus. Do you remember that one? "I'm Mister Heat Miser, I'm Mister Sun!" You gotta love it. It beats the Rudolph show hands down. That Rudolph claymation just drives me crazy--what a terrible message! Sure, everyone is nice to Rudolph after he saves the day--but they should have been kind in the first place!!!! Those reindeer are downright mean. And what's with Rudolph's father being such a chauvinist? ("You stay in the cave, woman!") But again, I digress.

As I mentioned above, Bethany had her immunizations and 18-month (can you believe she's 18 months already!) check today. She checks out great, although she's still an itty-bitty thing. She's finally (barely) hit 20 lbs. now, and is in the third percentile for her weight! Maybe if she stopped running constantly and, I don't know, ate a little more . . .but then, she wouldn't be our Bethany and we love her exactly the way she is!

Bethany forgot all about the shots as soon as the gingerbread-house candy came out. "Canny! Canny!" was her constant chant tonight, her little voice competing in volume with all of the catchy claymation tunes in the background. (And we gave her more than we should have, but let's all remember the poor girl was poked four times today. Tomorrow it's back to the veggies!)
